Choosing to attend any of Ms. Swanson’s Online Webinars or multi-session courses allows registrants to attend ‘live’ and ask questions in real time, or to watch the recordings at your convenience during the replay period. Time is allocated at the start of each online session for participants to share where they are based and open their microphones for conversation ahead of class. Other than one-time Webinars, Mary Virginia prepares an optional shared survey for participants to share their contact information, current project theme and subjects, interest in joining a study group, share what upcoming industry gatherings they plan to attend, and more, which have proven to build long-term community among participants when studying in the online environment.

About the 2025 Symposium:
“Are you an image maker or visual storyteller interested in bringing your photography and photo-related media to the book form? Or perhaps a bookmaker, educator, historian, curator, or collector looking to expand your knowledge of contemporary photobooks and handmade artists’ books? In this four-day online symposium, Susan kae Grant with Mary Virginia Swanson will explore the many options available to artists when considering the book form, including small press, fine art press, self-published, and handmade artists’ books.
Eight distinguished international Special Guests will join us to share their collective knowledge of photobooks and the many layers of considerations involved in bringing a book to completion and on to its audience. Book artists, designers, publishers, and collectors will share their studio practices, insights into production and marketing, and the role the visual book plays in educational initiatives and collecting strategies of libraries:
